FROM THE LAND

FOR TRADITION

Since 1907, we have carried on our family traditions as agriturismo, agricultural company and producers of extra virgin olive oil. We have produced excellence for five generations. Il Capitano is a multifunctional reality: the cultivated products are used in the preparation of the dishes and intended for those who want to relive the farmers’ culture among olive groves and pastures and through honest products straight from the source.
Tradition: the true treasure of the Il Capitano family
Respect for the environment, the importance of local customs and traditions, the value of authentic gestures that have been repeated for centuries: these are the elements that have been handed down from generation to generation in the Il Capitano family, which has seen its own labor of love transform intotrue entrepreneurial foresight. For several decades, artisanal methods and techniques to produce oil and other products have been handed down from father to son. Each generation has contributed their work to the well-being of the small community. All family members share the natural propensity for hospitality and courtesy of the Lucanian people, as well as a deep respect for traditions and the preparation of products by artisanal methods.

Grandfather Onofrio knew his trees; the excellent quality of his oil, and the large quantities of olives processed, had earned him the rank of Captain. We like to think that his love for the land has contributed to the oil’s harmonious and fruity scent and flavor, with bitter and spicy notes which, fused together, give personality and class to the foods seasoned with our oil.
Legend tells us that the olive tree was born on Adam's tomb from a seed coming from the earthly paradise. According to a Greek myth, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Poseidon, god of the sea, fought each other over the dominion of Attica. Then Zeus established that he would win whoever brought men the most useful gift. Poseidon offered a horse, but Athena won by bringing an olive tree: an immortal tree from whose berries men would obtain nourishment, strength, health, beauty, light and heat for the home.

PRODUCTS

THE GOLD OF THE EARTH

The four-leaf clover shape of this cured sausage comes from a particular binding technique that give it its structure. It is stuffed in a cylindrical shape, then tied vertically and horizontally to give it 4 lobes; the external color is dark red, which tends towards brown with maturation; the inside is purple red, slightly darker at the edges, with white pieces of only the finest lard clearly visible.

SOPRESSATA

Southern Italy, an ancient village: Caggiano. It is the home of the Il Capitano family history, one ofpreservation of a centuries-old tradition of agricultural cultivation, and at the same time one of change, where the fifth generation is building a multifunctional company. It is also a history of emigration to the Americas and of entrepreneurial aptitude for finding balance between ancient customs and modernity thanks to the belief in projecting the past into the future.

FUTURE

DIRECTION

The company’s territory in Pertosa, where the sheep graze, had been inherited by grandfather Onofrio from great-grandfather Onofrio Bavone, who had in turn inherited it from his father Peppe. PeppeBavone had bought the lands from the Mozzonis for the price of 7,000 lire, money earned in Dunkirk (NY), USA in 1910. This is the incipit of our family’s story; this is the direction we want to take in the future.
